Summer 2009-2010 Silver
Eagle Historical Summary:
The past 12 months have been an extremely busy and exciting time for the Silver Eagles of Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 115.
Last August, LtCol Danny "Jerky" Johnson assumed command of the squadron, and within 30 days, the squadron was crossing the Pacific to begin their 6-month Unit Deployment Program (UDP) at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan. Enroute to Japan, the Silver Eagles and their (12) F/A-18A++ aircraft stopped at MCAS Miramar, MCAS Kaneohe Bay, and Wake Island.
By October the Silver Eagles were working out of Kadena Air Base in Okinawa where they supported multiple large-force air-to-air missions as part of Exercise Ryukyu Air Warrior. This was immediately followed by Exercise Wolmi Do Fury in December, also at Kadena, and then the unit's return to MCAS Iwakuni to spend the 2009 Christmas holiday with their fellow Marines.
As 2010 rolled around, VMFA-115 began support of Exercise Ardent Blitz. Flying out of MCAS Iwakuni, this exercise allowed the Marines to rehearse operations over the Korean peninsula. This in turn was followed by a detachment to Korat Royal Thai Air Base to support Exercise Cobra Gold. Working with our Thai allies, the Silver Eagles were able share tactics and increase camaraderie with the Thai Royal Air Force.
After returning from Thailand, the Silver Eagles finally packed their bags and departed MCAS Iwakuni in March 2010. As before, the Silver Eagles stopped at Wake Island, MCAS Kaneohe Bay, and MCAS Miramar while making the trans-Pacific journey from Japan to their home station in Beaufort, SC.
In the midst of their post-deployment port/starboard leave in April, the Silver Eagles said farewell to SgtMaj Gongora and welcomed their new Sergeant Major, SgtMaj Lambert.
By May, the Silver Eagles were back at work full-force, preparing and subsequently deploying from MCAS Beaufort to support Exercise Enhanced Mojave Viper in California. Operating out of the Strategic Expeditionary Airfield at Twenty-nine Palms, VMFA-115 worked with 1st battalion 8th Marines and 2nd battalion 9th Marines as these two infantry battalions prepared to deploy for Operation Enduring Freedom in fall 2010.
Having dropped over 150,000 pounds of ordnance in the CA desert, VMFA-115 returned to Beaufort at the end of June and will remain here for the foreseeable future; conducting unit level training and spending time at home with their families.
